This bayonet (along with the others we are offering) was recently re-discovered at the Museum of North Idaho in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho and is believed to have belonged to the original Fort Sherman arsenal. The fort was located at the current campus of North Idaho College near lake Coeur d'Alene and was named after General William T Sherman who selected the site in 1877 and it operated between 1878-1900. The Museum opened in 1973 in the Powder Magazine building that was built in 1885 at Fort Sherman, now on the college campus. This bayonet was discovered in this first museum building and was kept in the museum archives for decades.

The US Model 1873 Socket Bayonet measures 21" overall, with a 18" blade and a inside socket diameter of .734". The Ricasso area is stamped "U.S." This was made to fit on the the US Model 1873 Springfield "Trapdoor" Rifles and Carbines of the 1870's to 1890's. No Scabbard.
